Forceps

Steve Hodgson with the forceps as they appeared within their concretion when found

The main surprise of the 2006 season was the discovery of a pair of medical forceps within a concretion. Forceps were used as pincers to extract embedded items such as arrowheads or small-bore shot.  These, together with the drug jars, or alborelli, that have been found, suggest the presence of a medical chest on board.  The forceps have beed sent to York Archaeological Trust for stabilization and treatment.

A contemporary wood-cut of an army surgeon standing beside his chest.  The ship at top indicates that they are overseas.  Fighting with firearms occupies the area to the left of the chest.  On the other side, the surgeon within his field-tent can be seen operating on one of the wounded. Forceps are featured in the foreground on the right.
